Tell them they can write FICTION!
My students were almost completely silent from 7:45-10:30 today because they got to write fictional stories. Yes, I said Writing Fiction! Instead of boring personal narratives about the time someone did something nice for them, they had fictional characters in a fictional setting! It was all make believe! Set in a castle they built! It was lovely. Children actually being creative!
This is what kept them busy while I worked on a mountain of paperwork, and vomited on the test scores I received today.
Later this afternoon (once rough drafts were complete) we had game time. Students were allowed to bring board games. There were several chess and checkers sets, but my favorite game that appeared was one of my childhood favorites!
Do you remember this game? I loved playing it, though I’m not sure why.
There is nothing like watching a kid who sort of know how to play chess (minimal strategy, but knows basic rules) play someone who has no idea how to play chess.
Tomorrow is clean out your desk and the teacher’s shelves day. Oh wait, I mean books and puzzle day.
